Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking is a high altitude trek with the panoramic view of Khumbu region. The entry point of the trek begins with a breathtaking 40 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Lukla airport, which is famous for being the world’s most dangerous airport. Everest Gokyo Trek covers a major portion of the Sagarmatha Conservation area, which is home to many endangered species such as snow leopard, and red panda. Kalapathhar is also another world famous viewpoint of this trek, which gives the trekkers the best view of Amadablam, Thamserku, Lhotse and Nuptse mountains at 5555m above sea level. Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking gives an opportunity to cross Cho La pass which is situated at 5420m and is recognised as one the most amazing pass of the world. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best months for Everest Gokyo Lake trekking.

Gokyo Lakes Trek is one of the most beautiful and highly recommended tours for tourists all over the globe. Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo valley is famous for the series of tall mountains that stand right before the eye. The Cho La Pass and surrounding lakes in Gokyo Valley make tourists feel as if they are in paradise. Cho La Pass takes us through the landmarks of the Khumbu region accompanied by majestically elevated mountains, rich and friendly Sherpa community, colorful monasteries, naturally wonderful Namche Bazaar, and the mighty Mount Everest.

Accommodations and Meals

Gokyo Lakes trek offers both tea-house and camping options. Trekkers can either choose to stay at teahouses, which are warm and cozy and offers various food menus just like at home whereas camping is another wild experience in the woods. Luxury tea houses with attached bathrooms are also available to the tourist who wishes to choose the easy way. During the trek, tourists can enjoy authentic Nepalese meals as well as the more common international cuisine that includes Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc. The teahouses provide bed and breakfast or anything from the lodge menu is available. Welcome, and farewell dinners are provided by the Sherpa community with respect to the tourist’s effort to travel to the Khumbu region. Homemade beer made from barley is a famous drink, which the Sherpa’s love to drink before the meal.

Safety Tips

Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek is a moderate-to-difficult trek. It passes via Cho La pass, which is at high altitude compared to any other pass. The icy landscapes of Cho La pass make Everest Gokyo Lake trekking more difficult and challenging compared to other famous trekking circuits. Therefore, previous trekking experience, physical fitness, and a positive attitude are essential. Tourists are likely to walk for 6-7 hours a day in average. Past hiking experience is necessary but does not require technical mountaineering expertise.  The medical condition of the trekkers is necessary to be in a fit condition without any chronic disease.

Brief Itinerary of Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek

Day 01: Arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (1300 m/4264 ft)
Day 02: Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and trek to Phakding (2651m/8700ft) 8km, 3 hrs trek
Day 03: Phakding to Namche (3440m/11280ft) 11km, 6-7 hrs
Day 04: Namche Acclimatization day or exploration day
Day 05: Namche to Dole (4200m), 5-6 hours
Day 06: Dole to Machhermo (4,470 m/ 14,663 ft): 5 – 6 hours
Day 07: Machharmo to Gokyo ( 4800m/ 15744ft, 5-6 hrs
Day 08: Gokyo Ri climb (5357m/17570ft) and back to Machharmo, 7-8 hrs

Kathmandu To Lukla By Flight And Trek To Phakding

Early Morning flight will take you to Lukla Tenzing-Hillary Airport. The mountain flight journey would be a mesmerizing memory in itself. The close view of mountain range and hills of Khumbu region, as well as the rural Nepal, can be savoured from the flight. Once landed in Lukla the trekking starts after meeting the rest of the support crew. The day’s trekking would be up to the Phakding.

Trek To Namche

Phakding to Namche is relatively easy trekking time spanning just up to 3 hrs. The trail comprises of a suspension bridge with colorful prayer flags in it. The views of Mountains start to welcome you towards its lap. The highlight of this part of the trail would be the Tibetan wall paintings and the occasional views of Mountains.

Acclimatization Day In Namche.

Early morning have small breakfast and to Everest view Hotel Gokyo Lake trekking requires strength and endurance as well as will power. The day’s rest will be taken in Namche in order to get prepared for the trek upwards. The acclimatization hiking will take place as you will be taken to world’s highest located hotel The Everest View Hotel after Breakfast. The panoramic views of mountains and the surrounding area from the hotel are splendid. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to go through the acclimatization hiking as it prepares your body and soul for the trekking.

Trek To Dole

The route is easier in the start as the trekker cross the valley of coniferous forest. If the season is of rhododendron blossoming then the smell and sight of the forest would be spectacular. The Yaks grazing in green pastures can be seen along with the beautiful landscape.

Trek From Dole To Machhermo

From this junction of the trekking, the route starts to become strenuous. The trekkers have to go past dense forest and scattered settlement, as well as the thin air, start to get to you. The trail will be uphill until we reach Machhermo. This place is also considered as the home of mystical Himalayan animal Yeti.

Trek From Machhermo To Gokyo

On this day the climbing takes place around 300 m only reaching the Gokyo Valley. The crossing of several glacier lakes before standing on Gokyo Valley which is less populated. The lodge and hotels at the banks of Gokyo Lake would be a romantic affair for you. The glacial lake in the lap of Himalayas provides worth of all the pain endured while coming to this place.

Gokyo To Dole

From Gokyo Lake, the hike uphill will be towards Gokyo Ri to observe the glorious morning sunrise upon the casement of Everest mountain region. The feeling of the mystical experience of Gokyo Lakes and the valley would accompany you throughout the trip back to Dole.

Trek Back To Namche

From Dole, the continuous trek will take you to Mongla Danda from where the descend trekking leads you to Dudh Koshi River and finally to Namche.

Return Back To Lukla

This is the last day of your trekking which would be very fun and exhilarating. You can enjoy with your group in eateries and bars and also you can dance in the groove with popular Nepalese folk songs.

Lukla To Kathmandu By Flight And Sightseeing In Kathmandu Valley

The mountain flight will take you back to Kathmandu and the evening farewell dinner will be organized with the cultural program for you before your departure to your home country.
